Fiend Bookshop
Odessa is 26 years old and describes herself as someone who has their finger in many different pies. She fears leaving a stone unturned; in that sense, Fiend is a stone turned. Reading has always been very dear to her; “it’s exploratory for the self and the world, and a way of getting away when getting away isn’t possible – at once enhancing your present while giving you somewhere else to go. I think it’s powerful!” Fiend has allowed Odessa to extend that love of reading into something to be shared with others, even in the form of particular kinds of books. Day-to-day activities with Fiend usually involve sending emails, wrapping up orders, and, her favourite, browsing books to stock. Odessa states that she is lucky that the workload can more or less shift with the time she has to spend on it (leaving her with more time to dip her finger into another of her pies).
Studio Wimsy
Jordan Schembri, is a 28-year-old creative raised in Northcote. She describes herself as being a bit of a ‘jack of all trades, master of none’. She wears many hats with Wimsy, among also navigating everyday life which while at times is absolutely overwhelming, also keeps her on her toes. “Wimsy came to be when I needed a system of some sort to guide my days. A project personified, in a way.”. Studio Wimsy is a Naarm-based graphic design studio indulging in both self-led and commissioned pieces that manifest across modes of apparel, prints and both digital and physical content. As Jordan describes, Wimsy has become an avenue for her to do favourite thing, research. The majority of Jordan’s work is symbolic of where she is at in life, whether it’s a new obsession or an ode to her inner child, with a dash of ‘unseriousness’, “(because you can’t be serious all the time, that would be tiring)”.
Claire Giuffre
Claire Giuffre is an emerging cinematographer and occasion director based in Naarm. Claire’s life changed when her year 9 art teacher inspected her sketchbook. Slowly the teacher stood up and announced to the class with great pride “Claire would be a terrific artist...”. She tapped at the oil pastel smudged page and took a ragged breath to finish her sentence “... If she had any hand-eye coordination whatsoever” before she coughed and spluttered away to the next art table; presumably to tear into another fifteen-year-old drawing. Shortly after that moment, Claire dropped the oil pastels and moved onto the camera, something with dials and buttons.
