According to Google statistics, the word liminal rapidly rose to online popularity in the year 2019, after a 4chan thread posting a photo of a large, empty room made the rounds. The vague and unsettling interior, flooded with yellow fluorescents and what appears to be a moist, worn carpet, evokes a feeling of unease and a dreamlike alternate reality. Liminality is often universal. Many working class people experience liminality in a unique sense, with the world constantly changing, in such a fast pace where many feel left behind. Many lack accessibility to basic resources of survival, especially healthcare and a liveable wage. This world for the everyday person feels akin to an empty corridor, familiar, yet transient, unknown, unpredictable. The world can be a cold, echoing shopping centre after hours, or a corporate office in the time of economic recession.
